Portraits - The Power of People

Alex Kilbee has had an interest in photography from an early age. After a three year photography diploma course at the prestigious Technikon Pretoria School of Photography in South Africa in the early 1990’s he has gone on to photograph the likes of Bryan Adams, Metallica and Gary Player – to name a few.

Rather than take a shotgun approach to his work, Alex makes time to spend with his subjects before photographing them in order to find out more about their personality. He also allows the subjects to pose themselves with very little input from him.

“I find that by allowing the sitters to pose themselves gives me far more natural reactions from them than if I were to stage manage their look. Also, by setting up a simple studio in their own homes, makes them more at ease.”
